Hikers and river rafters should be prepared before heading into the backcountry or floating down a river, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office officials say.

Here are some safety tips from the sheriff’s office:

  • Plan your trip and leave a detained description of the destination, route to and from, and time of return with a close friend or family member. Do not deviate from the plan.

  • ?Do not go into the mountains alone.

  • Plan for possible emergencies. Carry the 10 essentials: map, compass, flashlight, extra food and water, extra clothing, sunglasses, first-aid kit, pocket knife, waterproof matches, and candle or firestarter.

  • Have a knowledge of the area. Check weather conditions and be aware that conditions can change rapidly.

  • Know your limitations. Be physically and mentally prepared.

  • If lost or separated from your companions, establish a safe location and stay put until help arrives.

  • Plan ahead and know the river before you go.

  • Always use proper equipment, including an approved lifejacket.

  • Never use alcohol or drugs while rafting or doing any other water sport.

  • Always let a friend or family member know where you will start on the river and where you plan to get out. Don’t change that plan.

  • Children and those who can’t swim should not go into the river.
