On the Enterprise
Sailors and Marines assigned to the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group have arrived in Norfolk, Va, following an eight-month deployment in the Mediterranean and Arabian seas.
USS Enterprise’s return to Norfolk is the 25th and final homecoming in the ship’s 51 years of service. The aircraft carrier is scheduled to be deactivated Dec. 1 in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Station. Enterprise was commissioned Nov. 25, 1961, as the eighth ship to bear the name Enterprise. The December ceremony will be the last official public event for Enterprise, and will serve as a celebration for the more than 100,000 sailors who have served aboard the ship.
Among those who have returned from deployment on the USS Enterprise are Navy Lt. Cmdr. Ken B. Sanchez, Petty Officer 1st Class Melinda J. Ambers and Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony J. Kubin.
Sanchez, a 1981 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, joined the Navy in January 1984.
Ambers, daughter of Beverly Watkins of Oak Harbor, is a 1995 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Dallas. She joined the Navy in July 1997.
Kubin, son of Judith Johnson of Marysville and Joseph Kubin of Everett, graduated in 2007 graduate from Cascade High School and joined the Navy in April 2008.
