EVERETT — Dozens of Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies lined their patrol cars outside the county jail in downtown Everett Thursday night to honor a friend and coworker who passed away.
Corrections deputy Gary Ellis, 59, died Thursday at his home in Everett due to complications of lung cancer, according to the Snohomish County medical examiner’s office. He is survived by a mother, sister, four children, eight grandchildren and a former spouse.
Before joining the jail staff nearly two decades ago, Ellis served in the U.S. Navy, where he had the title of chief before retiring, and as a reserve lieutenant with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
A statement from the sheriff’s office noted the positive influence Ellis had on those around him.
“Whether he was helping an inmate or a co-worker, Gary was dedicated to his profession and serving our community,” the statement said. “He made a forever impact on our agency and the residents of Snohomish County. He will be greatly missed.”
Sheriff Adam Fortney also shared some words through the statement.
“Deputy Gary Ellis was a beloved member of the Corrections Bureau of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office,” Fortney said. “… He clearly lived a life of service to our community and country. While we all mourn his passing, last night’s show of support was a reminder to over 800 employees of the Sheriff’s Office that we are a family, and we will stand together and support one another, during good times and bad. May Deputy Ellis rest in peace.”
