EVERETT — A man charged in King County Superior Court with multiple felony counts in connection with a string of robberies, including one where more than $30,000 worth of jewelry was allegedly stolen from an Everett pawn shop, pleaded not guilty on Oct. 23.
On Oct. 21, King County prosecutors charged the 29-year-old with two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm for thefts at Cash America Pawns in Renton and Shoreline. Prosecutors also charged the suspect with one count of first-degree robbery and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm for a separate robbery case that occurred during August, according to court documents.
Bail for both cases totals $250,000, according to King County Prosecutors’ Office spokesperson Douglas Wagoner in an email.
On Jan. 24, Renton officers responded to a panic alarm at a Cash America Pawn at 415 Rainier Avenue North after multiple suspects entered the store with hammers and crowbars, court documents said. Upon arrival, officers found the glass display cases broken and the jewelry stolen.
Surveillance footage obtained by officers showed three suspects entering the store, with the primary suspect allegedly smashing the cases with a sledgehammer and putting the contents into bags, court documents said.
In a police interview, a store employee said she was preparing to close when the suspect entered and looked at her like her “life didn’t matter,” court documents said. A breakdown of the stolen items provided by Cash America Pawn estimated the retail value at $323,777.
Renton investigators later learned of a similar incident around 11:29 a.m. Jan. 9 at Cash America Pawn in Seattle, 2825 Rainier Avenue North, where suspects allegedly smashed display cases with sledgehammers before fleeing with high-value jewelry. The total loss was $27,572, court documents said.
Around 3:15 p.m. Feb. 6, Everett police responded to reports of a “smash and grab” theft involving three masked suspects at 7107 Evergreen Way, court documents said. Surveillance footage showed two suspects using sledgehammers to break display cases, and a third suspect acting as a lookout.
In around a minute, the trio allegedly stole between $30,259.99 and $34,229.79 worth of jewelry and did $2,959.13 worth of damage to the display cases before fleeing in a Dodge Durango registered to the primary suspect, court documents said. Flock Safety license plate data showed the car at Seattle and Lynnwood Lowe’s stores earlier that day.
At the Lynnwood Lowe’s, the suspect is allegedly seen in surveillance footage selecting a black and blue sledgehammer similar to the one used in the robbery, court documents said. Renton investigators matched the suspect’s jacket in the footage to what the suspect allegedly wore in the Everett and Renton incidents.
Around 5:22 p.m. Feb. 15, video footage shows the Dodge Durango concealing itself behind a car wash before the occupants head toward the nearby Cash America Pawn at 20305 Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline, court documents said. Twelve minutes later, the suspects were seen running out of the store. The total loss from the incident was $28,022, court documents said.
On April 25, Renton officers attempted to arrest the suspect and serve a search warrant for his residence, court documents said. The suspect allegedly fled in the Dodge Durango across a neighbor’s lawn and escaped into a residential neighborhood. Officers were able to conduct a search, where they found similar clothing to that depicted in surveillance footage and several firearms.
Around noon Aug. 14, Seattle police responded to reports of a robbery at Menashe and Sons Jewelers, 4532 California Avenue Southwest, court documents said. One suspect allegedly struck the store’s door multiple times with a sledgehammer before an additional suspect kicked it down, court documents said. Upon entry, three suspects began smashing the display case while a fourth pointed a can of pepper spray toward a store employee, who backed away.
Suspects remained in the store for less than two minutes before fleeing, court documents said.
Around 6:18 p.m. on Oct. 16, Renton officers observed the suspect leaving his residence with a backpack, court documents said. Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspect fled on foot past his apartment, where he fell down a hill, discarded his backpack, threw a firearm over a fence and attempted to climb that fence before being apprehended by K-9 Raider.
Upon searching the suspect’s backpack, officers discovered a Ziploc containing methamphetamine, two bags of fentanyl powder, a digital scale with “excessive” fentanyl residue, clear plastic bags and $1,040, court documents said.
Officers took the suspect into custody on suspicion of three counts of first-degree robbery, three counts of first-degree malicious mischief, three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, attempting to elude a police vehicle and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, court documents said.
The suspect is a four-time convicted felon. Three convictions were in connection with unlawful possession of a firearm, and the last was in connection with second-degree robbery, court documents said.
The suspect’s next appearance in the King County Superior Court is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 10.
