EVERETT — The man who was fatally shot by a state trooper on I-5 on Thursday has been identified.
On Tuesday, the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Marvin Arellano, 31.
Arellano, of Nampa, Idaho, died from multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office determined.
Shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, the Washington State Patrol responded to a report of a man armed with a hammer on the shoulder of northbound I-5, north of the exit to East Marine View Drive, said Courtney O’Keefe, a spokesperson for the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team.
According to authorities, Arellano attacked the road workers, then the trooper.
In a video taken by a bystander in a car, Arellano is seen in black shorts walking up to a trooper on the shoulder of the freeway, yelling. He jogs away from the trooper and yells back at him. Arellano charges back at the officer.
The trooper fired three shots at Arellano, who fell to the ground. Police tried life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities shut down northbound traffic for hours, causing hundreds of drivers to be stuck in standstill into the night.
The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team responded. The team, also known as SMART, includes a cadre of detectives tasked with examining police use of force.
The trooper had not been identified as of Tuesday. And the task force had not provided any updates on the investigation.
Court records show from 2010 to 2019, Arellano received various traffic infractions in Idaho, including for speeding and failing to obey an officer.
