Our Towns: Around the county

Snohomish: Schools get safety lights

Three area schools should soon be a little safer. Snohomish received $42,000 in grants for the installation of flashing beacon light systems in school zones at three elementary schools. Central Primary School, Emerson Elementary School and Cascade View Elementary should have these upgrades by the beginning of the school year this fall.

The beacon lights run on solar power and are timed to flash while children are arriving and leaving school.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission provided the grant, and the Snohomish School District also chipped in $4,000. The city public works department is installing the lights at no charge.

Monroe: City buys marksman rifles

The city agreed Tuesday to buy two $9,000 rifles with money from a federal seizure account. Monroe police have two officers who are certified marksmen, but the department hasn’t had any money in its budget to buy the rifles.

In September, police received money for their part in an investigation that led to law enforcement officers’ seizing narcotics and money.

The city plans to use this money to purchase two Remington .308 rifles, which cost $9,050 each. A marksman team can help during high-risk situations, including bank robberies and hostage situations.

Lynnwood: Police host garage sale

The Lynnwood Police Department’s annual garage sale is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the old CompUSA building in Lynnwood Square at 19800 44th Ave. W., in Lynnwood. The sale benefits the Lynnwood Police Department’s annual Shop With A Cop holiday program in December.

The program is an opportunity for law enforcement officers to foster positive relationships within their community. For more information, call Shannon Sessions at the Lynnwood Police Department at 425-670-5635.

Mountlake Terrace: ‘Mario Cart’ tourney

The Mountlake Terrace Library is hosting a “Mario Cart” video game tournament for teenagers from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The tournament will be played using the Nintendo Wii system.

The tournament is sponsored by the Friends of the Mountlake Terrace Library. Register at www.sno-isle.org. The library is at 23300 58th Ave. W., next to City Hall.

For more information, call Dawn at 360-651-7069 or 425-776-8722.
