DARRINGTON — A brush fire that broke out Saturday near the Snohomish-Skagit county line grew to 48 acres just under 48 hours.
Around 2 p.m. Saturday, Darrington and Oso firefighters were dispatched to a report of a fire 20 feet by 30 feet and located about 7.2 miles northeast of Darrington.
The fire was situated in steep rugged terrain about 600 feet above the closest road.
“With the combination of wind and terrain, the fire quickly grew and a helicopter was ordered out of Olympia,” the Darrington Fire District wrote on Facebook.
“The scene was eventually turned over to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.”
Incident commander Josh Riepe said the blaze currently poses no threat to surrounding communities or infrastructure, and fire managers are focused on safely establishing control lines to contain the fire.
The state Department of Natural Resources had about 82 personnel on site and was being assisted by the U.S. Forest Service.
Crews were working to improve access around the fire and establish control lines. Road guards were posted to limit access to the site.
Smoke was not expected to affect the community though it may be increasingly visible at the fire site as temperatures warm.
Those in the area can expect to see DNR coordinating a large helicopter response.
