Anacortes psychiatrist Richard C. Hall, M.D. opined strenuously on Jan. 30, “Three minutes to midnight no time to rebuild Trident,” that America was on the verge of making a huge mistake if it plans to replace the deterrent force nuclear armed submarine fleet.
He denies that deterrence works. His article was both thoughtful and instructive. Most Americans probably have little knowledge of the subject. No rational person wants to see the world destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. Dr. Hall busies himself opposing American nuclear weapons and leads a professional group in this state with that as its goal.
Is it irrational to support nuclear weapons? President Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton didn’t seem to agree with Dr. Hall for the past seven years and no meaningful reductions were enacted by them during that time although some meaningless papers may have been signed by them for their own vain-glorious personal legacy of nonsense.
President Clinton’s 1993 deal with North Korea to stop building nuclear weapons failed. North Korea now has weapons of mass destruction and routinely threatens America, Japan and South Korea with nuclear destruction. I would think it hilarious if, Dr. Hall would enter North Korea and propose this fantasy and result in his arrest and detention there for speaking out.
Here, Dr. Hall is allowed to denounce nuclear weapons because he is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Dr. Hall could go to other nuclear armed countries and protest probably resulting in him being deported as persona non grata. Dr. Hall is unable to see and intentionally blind to the connection between American civil liberties and a strong American military ready to resist any and all aggressors to keep and maintain his personal freedoms.
I suspect he chose to avoid military service believing that his views were superior to those that volunteered and sacrificed much for our country. What a shame, that members of the intelligentsia place themselves above all others and work to weaken our country, from within, while enjoying great personal success in an open society protected from hostile aggression by our nuclear umbrella.
