Herald’s layoffs won’t make newspaper profitable

As a resident of Snohomish County for most of my life, I am horrified by the bad faith shown by the new owners of The Herald in laying off a dozen award-winning writers and photographers this week.

Local, independent journalism is the key to a healthy democracy and ours is quite fragile these days.

I am a subscriber who cares about the quality of the articles, the regional understanding that informs the stories, and an independent voice that is not merely a parroting of a conglomerate’s larger agenda.

Please reinstate the staff and find a better way to make the paper profitable. Also pay your creators a living wage.
