Lot prices way out of reach for most

The Monday letter, “More seniors get marching orders” presented the basic facts concerning Mariner Village. I would like to add to those facts.

Residents of Mariner Village may purchase the lots on which their homes are sited for $200,000. Few, if any, have the resources to make this purchase. Effectively, this changed the homes from assets to liabilities as few homes can be moved elsewhere (state law) and must be torn down and the debris removed at the homeowner’ expense.

At the $200,000 purchase price for each lot, the owners would realize more than twice their reported purchase price.

As residents, my wife and I can attest to the stress the situation has generated. We and the occupants of the 160-odd units must in the next 15 months find new homes and leave our quiet, pleasant surroundings – for what, we cannot guess.
