Partisan filter distorts too much

I saw in the Monday paper a fellow complaining about a ship being named for the late Rep. John Murtha, who by all accounts served honorably in Vietnam and other places. (Letter, “Naming ship after Murtha an insult.”)
I think in the writer’s eyes, Murtha’s biggest sin was being a Democrat. Maybe things are getting a little too partisan these days. I was a union ironworker for many years and knew many combat veterans who also voted Democrat. What I am trying to say is I can’t see the sense in hating half the population of our country just because of their politics.
