Thank you for your interesting front-page article describing how the government of South Korea is recognizing the sacrifices of Korean War veterans by bestowing on them the Ambassador of Peace medal (“Korea doesn’t forget US troops of that cold, forgotten war,’ The Herald, July 24).
One quote from your article reads: “The Korean government has never forgotten.” As a former Peace Corps volunteer in Korea in the 1960s, I can vouch for the truth of this statement. In 2009 I participated in one of several “Peace Corps Volunteer Revisits” at the invitation of the government of the Republic of Korea. They wanted to say “thank you” to us as well, acknowledging the small part we played in the tremendous progress they’ve made rebuilding their country, the only country in the world to have invited former Peace Corps volunteers to return.
Merely by happenstance I was again reminded of this during the last week when I took my Kia (a Korean-made car) in for service. In the customer waiting area were several copies of an excellent coffee table book titled “Korea Reborn – A Grateful Nation Honors War Veterans for 60 Years of Growth,” replete with excellent photos from the war years as well as images of a modern, economically advanced Korea. This book is available at the Sno-Isle and Everett public libraries. I would highly recommend it.
