Outgoing sheriff Adam Fortney and I agree on one thing: the sheriff should be elected and not appointed. That being said, you don’t need strong glasses to read the tea leaves; his opponent won, based on performance and attitude.
He is lucky that his government workplace laws and rights allow him to go back to his old position. His new supervisor is very magnanimous in overlooking his unconfirmed accusation that she called him a racist (I couldn’t find it ) in the campaign. Now he makes a statement that he hopes the new leadership “knocks it out of the park.” That will be considerably easier if doesn’t start rallying his like-minded disgruntled colleagues (he defied officials democratically elected by the majority of the voters in his advocating against the required masks, vaccinations, etc. and bringing in a similar-minded rogue sheriff Mark Lamb in Arizona, another Joe Arpaio wannabe to campaign with him).
If Fortney wants to make law, he should run for legislative office. Otherwise, just enforce the law and take orders from his supervisors. Snohomish County is not his county nor kingdom, it is his employer.
