AquaSox fall in high-scoring affair with Emeralds

Mariners outfielder Mitch Hainger homers in his final rehab game with Everett, but the AquaSox lose 12-7.

EVERETT — Mitch Haniger sparked a four-run first inning with a solo home run, but the Everett AquaSox couldn’t hold on in a 12-7 loss to the Eugene Emeralds on Sunday at Funko Field.

Haniger went 1 for 3 with the home run on the final day of his three-game stint with the AquaSox (43-46). He’s scheduled to continue his rehab assignment with the Tacoma Rainiers. Alberto Rodriguez followed Haniger’s blast with a two-run homer and Victor Labrada added a run-scoring double for a 4-0 lead in the first.

But the Emeralds (52-35) answered back on Riley Mahan’s three-run blast in the second. Mahan plated two more runs in the third on a fielder’s choice and an error, Simon Whiteman added an RBI single and Vaun Brown a bases-loaded walk for a 7-4 lead.

Eugene’s Luis Matos extended the lead with an RBI single before Justin Lavey and Noelvi Marte drove in runs to make 8-6 in the sixth. Brown responded with an RBI double and Matos a two-run home run in the seventh.

Everett’s James Paker hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh.

Simon Whiteman put Eugene on top 12-7 with an RBI single in the eighth.

The Emeralds finished with 16 hits and seven walks. Mahan had a team-best three hits.

The AquaSox pounded out 11 hits to go with six walks. Labrada delivered a game-high four hits, including two doubles.

Abel Adames (5-2) earned the win despite allowing two runs, one earned, over two innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed two hits and one walk.

Peyton Alford (3-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks over two innings of relief. He struck out two.
