SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Everett’s wrestling team made sure the long drive to Sedro-Woolley wasn’t a wasted trip.

Everett used its depth and a surprise first-place finish by fifth-seeded senior Tyler Pound at 145 pounds to score 315 points and place second out of eight teams behind perennial power-house Sedro-Woolley (362 points) Saturday at the Class 3A sub-regional wrestling tournament at Sedro-Woolley High School.

Pound had to work hard for his championship, winning a 12-8 overtime decision over Adolph Rivas of Mount Vernon and a 10-8 decision over Nelson Petrone of Meadowdale before advancing to the final against Ferndale’s Ryan Carlson.

“I didn’t have an easy match,” Pound said simply.

Pound was Everett’s only first-place finish, but the Seagulls placed four wrestlers in second, four wresters in third and three wrestlers in fourth place to qualify 12 wrestlers for the 3A Regional IV tournament, which will be held Feb. 14th at Sunnyside High School.

Only Sedro-Woolley (ranked No. 4 in the state by Washington Wrestling Report), which had 14 top four finishes, will bring more wrestlers to the regional.

“We did a little better than we expected,” Everett head coach Brien Elliott said. “We thought we’d take 10 wrestlers and we’re taking 12.”

“Sedro-Woolley has a lot of good wrestlers,” Pound added. “Derek Garcia (152-pounds) is frickin good.”

Everett senior Cary Irwin placed second at 152-pounds behind Sedro-Woolley’s nationally ranked Garcia and Zane Crook (103 pounds), Joel Palbrica (130 pounds) and Alec Bird (215 pounds) also took second place in their respective weight classes.

Everett’s Taylor Boyce, who placed sixth at state last year, injured his shoulder in a match against Meadowdale’s Phillip Stevenson and lost a 10-5 decision. Boyce still managed to place fourth and qualify for the regional.

Meadowdale placed fourth with 170.50 points. First-year high school Glacier Peak, powered by first-place finishes by Joseph Bratz at 103 pounds and Joshua St. Marie at 119 pounds, placed fifth.

“Joshua wrestled real aggressive,” Glacier Peak head coach Bryan Mossburg said. “He’s developing a lot maturity as a wrestler and understanding how to wrestle to the best of his ability (and) Joseph has been so consistent all year … He hasn’t been challenged much.

“Those two are the first placers in school history and they’re pretty proud that they’re going to be the first guys up on that wall.”

Everett placed eighth at 3A state last year, in a bit of a surprise. This year Everett, ranked sixth in state by the Washington Wrestling Report, isn’t surprising anyone.

“We definitely have the opportunity,” Pound said of the chance his team has to improve on its eighth place at state. “We definitely have the guys.”

Rex Febus of Mount Vernon won head coach of the year award. Jack Hurd of Sedro-Woolley won assistant coach of the year.
