EVERETT – Former University of Washington baseball coach Bob MacDonald has been named hitting coach of the Everett Aquasox.

The AquaSox, a minor-league affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, made the announcement Tuesday. The hiring of MacDonald completes the team’s three-person coaching staff for 2009. He joins manager John Tamargo and pitching coach Rich Dorman.

MacDonald, 66, served as head baseball coach of the Huskies from 1977 to 1992. He compiled a 422-322-7 record. He was a five-time Pac-10 Northern Division Coach of the Year (1979-1981, 1985, 1990 and 1992). In 1994, MacDonald left Washington to become the head baseball coach at Navy, where he was 178-152-3 in seven seasons.

Since his retirement from college coaching in 2000, MacDonald, who lives in Port Orchard, has remained involved in baseball. He serves on the advisory board of the West Coast League and has been a batting-practice pitcher for the Seattle Mariners.

Everett opens its 2009 season June 20 at Vancouver. The team’s home opener is June 23 against Spokane.
