The AquaSox saw their lead in the High-A West standings shrink to only one game Wednesday night as they fell to Eugene, 6-2, for the second straight game.
The Emeralds (54-38) scored six straight runs after falling behind 1-0 in the first inning. Ricardo Genoves hit a three-run blast to left field in the second inning to put Eugene up 3-1. Brett Auerbach added a solo home run in the fifth, and the Emeralds took advantage of errant pitching in the seventh — scoring runs on a bases-loaded walk by Tyler Fitzgerald and wild pitch — to take a 6-1 lead. Eugene had only one hit in the inning but walked three times.
Everett (54-36) scored on an error in the eighth and eventually brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth after a Justin Lavey home run, Victor Labrada walk and Connor Hoover single — all came with two outs. Cade Marlowe’s fly out to center field ended the late rally.
Eugene’s Connor Nurse (3-7) picked up the win, allowing one run, two hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out six. Genoves finished 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI.
Juan Then (2-3) went just 3.2 innings in the loss. He stuck out six, didn’t walk a batter and allowed three runs on five hits. Hoover got on base four times, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk.
