BRANDON, Canada — The Calgary Hitmen scored four third period goals, including three goals in the final six minutes, to beat the Moncton Wildcats 5-4 Saturday in the second game of the Memorial Cup.
Moncton got the game’s first goal at 9:53 of the first period when the Wildcats’ Devon MacAusland flipped a pass toward a wide open teammate and the puck was accidently redirected into the net by a Calgary defenseman. The Wildcats outshot Calgary 13-3 in the period and 37-28 for the game.
The Hitmen fell behind 2-0 midway through the second period when Moncton defenseman David Savard fooled goaltender Martin Jones with a perfectly placed wrist shot. The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-0 at 14:11 on a goal by Alex Saulnier.
Calgary’s Tyler Fiddler cut the deficit to 3-1 with his first goal of the tournament, scoring with just 68 seconds to play in the second period, and the Hitmen made it a one-goal game on Joel Broda’s score three-minutes into the third.
Moncton pushed its lead back to two goals midway through the third period when Saulnier scored nine seconds into a powerplay to make it 4-2. It was Saulnier’s second goal of the game.
The Hitmen began their rampage 51/2 minutes later. Giffen Nyren scored at the 14:18 mark, Kris Foucault tied it two minutes later and Tyler Shattock scored the game-winner 78 seconds before the final buzzer.
Calgary’s Broda was named the game’s first star while Alex Saulnier received second star honors and Tyler Shattock was named third star.
