Case Matter is being summoned by the majors.
The Jackson High School graduate, who just finished his redshirt sophomore season with the University of Washington baseball team, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Monday.
Matter, a right-handed pitcher, is coming off a season in which he made 19 appearances with the Huskies, including one start. In 25.1 innings he went 4-1 with a 3.91 ERA and five saves, walking 22 and striking out 34. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 recognition as he helped Washington finish 35-20 and reach the NCAA Tournament. In 2022 he was 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 43.1 innings, walking 30 and striking out 53.
Matter graduated from Jackson in 2020, meaning he didn’t have a senior baseball season because of the coronavirus pandemic. He was a second-team All-Area selection at pitcher in 2019 as a junior, when he was also a first-team All-Wesco selection as both a pitcher and infielder.
Matter still has two years of college eligibility remaining, so he could either sign with the Rangers or elect to return to school.
Rounds 11 through 20 take place Tuesday, when other players with Snohomish County ties could potentially be selected.
