Jayme Barnes wins Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup

ALGER, Wash. — Jayme Barnes did something that hasn’t been done in over a decade at Skagit Speedway.

The Everett, Wash., driver won the 2008 Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Camping World RV.

The last time a local, weekly 410 sprint car racer won the biggest race of the year at Skagit Speedway was 1992.

Barnes earned $25,000 for the win, with the final two podium spaces filled by runner- up Roger Crockett of Medford, Ore., and San Jose, Calif., driver Tim Kaeding in third.

Tyler Walker of Los Angeles led the first 12 laps of the 40-lap Dirt Cup Race of Champions, with Barnes close behind him.

In heavy traffic, Barnes and Walker swapped the lead until Barnes narrowly split two lapped cars, trapping Walker and earning the front spot.

Through numerous restarts, Barnes was able to pull away and stay in front for the remaining 28 laps.

Kyle Hirst of Loomis, Calif., won the B main; Josh DeWitt of Snohomish, Wash., finished first in the C main; and Michael Harris of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., won the D main,

The first three rows of the mains were set by six-lap scrambles. Walker won the A scramble; Steve Kilcup of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., won the B scramble; and Nick Engberg of Burlington, Wash., won the C scramble.

The Wilson Auto Broker Outlaw Hornets ran a 12-lap main event with 2007 Hornet Nationals champion Cory Swatzina winning over Ricky Young and Bobby Collins.
