Murphy finishes third in district

MOUNT VERNON — Senior Jared Smith drilled a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to play as Archbishop Murphy defeated Sehome 64-63 in the 2A District 1 boys basketball tournament on Saturday.
Archbishop Murphy, which earned a spot in the state tournament earlier in the week, finished third in the district tournament.
Junior forward J. D. Melton led Murphy with 16 points. Smith scored seven and added seven assists for the Wildcats while senior post Brendan Sherrer grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 14 points of his own.
