MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Pilchuck baseball team split a season opening doubleheader on Saturday, beating Burlington-Edison in the first game 9-2, and dropping the second, 3-0 to Cascade.
In the first game, the Tomahawks trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but unleashed an 8 run rally to win comfortably.
After the first two hitters walked, catcher Kyle Nobach unloaded with a three-run home run to give MP the lead for good. But the Tomahawks were not done. MP loaded the bases and Blake Stober cleaned them off with a three-run triple.
Tomahawks head coach Kurt Koshelnik was particularly pleased with with the first outing of starting pitcher Jake Johnson. Although he did not pick up the win, the senior recorded 7 strikeouts in 4 innings of work, allowing two hits and a walk.
Cascade’s KJ Brady proved to be too much for Marysville Pilchuck in the second game. With two on in scoring position and two outs in the 5th, Brady singled up the middle with two strikes to score both runners and give the Bruins a little breathing room.
Not that he needed it.
The sophomore also came through on the mound, firing a complete game shutout and striking out 12.
“He did a good job locating his fastball, changing speeds and keeping the hitters off balance by working ahead,” Cascade head coach Scott Stencil said.
