SOFTBALL

3A District 1 Tournament

At Phil Johnson Ballfields

Championship (both to state)

Snohomish 4, Mountlake Terrace 0

EVERETT — Few high school softball teams in Wesco or District 1 have experienced the type of sustained success Snohomish has over the past decade.

The Panthers have racked up numerous league titles, district championship game appearances and state tournament berths during their run of excellence.

One thing that’s mostly eluded Snohomish over the years has been a victory in the district title game.

That victory wasn’t able to escape the grasp of the 2023 rendition of the program, though.

Skyla Bristol spun a two-hit shutout and top-seeded Snohomish bested third-seeded Mountlake Terrace 4-0 in the Class 3A District 1 championship showdown Thursday at Phil Johnson Ballfields.

Consolation (winner to state, loser out)

Stanwood 12, Marysville Getchell 1 (5)

EVERETT — Madilynn Rel hit a grand slam, Eliot McDonald allowed only one hit during a complete game in the circle and 12th-seeded Stanwood topped sixth-seeded Marysville Getchell 12-1 in five innings in a winner-to-state, loser-out Class 3A District 1 Tournament consolation bracket game Thursday at Phil Johnson Ballfields.

As a result, the tournament’s lowest-seeded team is heading to the state. It’s the first state appearance for the Spartans since 2010 and just the third overall in program history.

Stanwood (12-12) used three doubles in the top of the first to put two runs on the board. McDonald and Karsen Bilow each plated runs in the inning.

The Spartans tacked on two more in the third and Rel took a pitch the opposite way and over the fence in right field for her grand slam during a six-run fourth.

Rel and Amelia Norton added RBI singles in the fifth to put Stanwood up 12-1 and within three outs of the mercy rule victory.

Marysville Getchell (13-10) scored its run on a sacrifice fly in the first.

Cascade 16, Everett 15 (9)

EVERETT — Tessa Hahn scored the winning run in the ninth and second-seeded Cascade outlasted ninth-seeded Everett 16-15 in a wild winner-to-state, loser-out Class 3A District 1 tournament consolation bracket contest Thursday at Phil Johnson Ballfields.

The victory clinched the Bruins (17-6) their second consecutive state berth and third in program history.

Abby Surowiec homered twice, finished a triple shy of the cycle and tossed two scoreless innings in extras to earn the win in the circle.

Cascade raced to a 7-0 lead in the second after Jaidyn Wilson and Surowiec hit back-to-back solo homers and Surowiec provided a three-run blast followed by a solo shot from Alexa Hamshaw. Wilson added an RBI single in the second.

Jaidyn Wilson and Surowiec hit back-to-back solo blasts in the first. Surowiec hit a three-run bomb in the second and Alexa Hamshaw followed with a solo shot for another set of back-to-back blasts. Wilson added an RBI single in the second.

But Everett (12-12) rallied for eight runs with the help of some fielding miscues in the fourth. Samantha Stine and Ruby Wacker hit RBI singles, Braylon Yarwood hit a two-run double and Madeline Pewitt put the Seagulls on top with a three-run home run just inside the foul pole in left field.

BOYS SOCCER

3A State Tournament

Round 2 (loser out)

Ballard 3, Shorewood 0

SHORELINE — Just call them the Great Wall of Ballard.

The Ballard High School boys soccer team’s defensive trio of Lucas Sussman, Cole French and Jack Rollins was as impenetrable as China’s Great Wall was to the northern tribes, and as a result the Shorewood Stormrays’ season came to an abrupt end.

Shorewood found no route through the heart of Ballard’s stout defense, and the District 1-champion Stormrays were upset by the Beavers 3-0 in the Class 3A state round of 16 Thursday night at Shoreline Stadium.

The third-seeded Stormrays were coming off consecutive victories against undefeated foes and had been shut out just once all season long. But Ballard’s towering trio left no room for Shorewood’s attackers to get through, and Ballard goals early in each half left the Stormrays futilely banging their heads against the Beavers’ gargantuan stone barrier.
