Silvertips’ point streak ends with loss to Winterhawks

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Everett Silvertips’ point streak is over.

The Portland Winterhawks knocked off the Tips 3-0 before 3,938 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday.

U.S. Division-leading Everett (32-17-1-2, 67 points) had won nine of 10 entering Wednesday’s game, with a shootout loss at Seattle as the only blemish.

Portland (30-17-1-3, 64 points) became the second team in the division to reach 30 wins and moved within three points of Everett to the top spot.

The Winterhawks were the last team to deal Everett a defeat in regulation all the way back on Jan. 6.

Wednesday’s game was scoreless until the third period was more than half over.

Kieffer Bellows broke up the shutout when he finished a power-play cross-ice feed from Cody Glass at 11:11.

Bellows then added a second goal two minutes later when an apparent pass made its way through Everett goalie Carter Hart’s legs.

Skyler McKenzie’s empty-netter at 18:51 clinched the victory for Portland.

McKenzie added an assist and Glass assisted all three of Portland’s goals.

Bellows has seven goals in seven games against Everett this season.

Everett outshot Portland 10-5 in a scoreless opening period.

Then things changed entirely as the Winterhawks outshot the Tips 37-11 in the final two frames.

Hart kept Everett in the game with 39 saves on 41 shots faced.

Portland counterpart Cole Kehler saved all 21 shots he saw for his third shutout of the season.

Portland was 1-for-5 on the power play while Everett came up empty on five chances.

The Tips play at Kelowna on Friday and return home Saturday for Star Wars Night when they play host to the Rockets.
