State baseball preview: Capsules for local matchups

Below are capsules for Saturday’s baseball state regionals involving local teams. Each classification’s 16-team state tournament is broken into four four-team regionals. The winners of each regional advance to next Friday’s state semifinals.

CLASS 4A

Everett Memorial Stadium

Game 1: Jackson (15-6) vs. South Kitsap (17-7), 10 a.m.

Game 2: Inglemoor (12-11) vs. Skyview (19-4), 1 p.m.

Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 45 minutes after conclusion of Game 2

Jackson: The Timberwolves won the 4A Northwest District tournament title behind a brilliant pitching performance from Case Matter, who threw 6 2/3 hitless innings in a combined no-hitter to lead Jackson to its first state berth since 2013. The Timberwolves’ high-powered offense averages 8.2 runs per game, led by Addison Beckman (team-high .413 batting average) and Oregon State University-bound standouts Carter Booth (.366 and five home runs) and Ben Steck (.389 and two homers).

Did you know? After entering the postseason with a losing record, Inglemoor won three straight games to claim the KingCo 4A tournament title and the program’s first state berth since 2009.

CLASS 3A

Sherman Anderson Field (Mount Vernon)

Game 1: Arlington (22-2) vs. Eastside Catholic (16-7), 10 a.m.

Game 2: Marysville Pilchuck (19-4) vs. Bonney Lake (20-5), 1 p.m.

Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 45 minutes after conclusion of Game 2

Arlington: After rallying from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning of a district elimination game against Meadowdale, the Eagles walked off in the ninth to earn their third consecutive state berth. Arlington went unbeaten in Wesco 3A play and has won 21 of its last 22 games. The Eagles allow just three runs per game, led by the standout pitching trio of Cameron Smith, Owen Bishop and Jacob Burkett. Seattle University-bound Gavin Rork is batting .462 for the Eagles, who reached the state quarterfinals each of the previous two seasons. Arlington is seeking its first-ever state semifinal berth.

Marysville Pilchuck: Riding an 11-game win streak, the senior-laden Tomahawks are making their first state appearance since 2009. Marysville Pilchuck steamrolled to the 3A Northwest District title, outscoring opponents by a combined 29-1 margin in its three tournament games. Eric Anderson has a 0.58 earned-run average in 48 2/3 innings pitched and is batting .419 with 12 extra-base hits. The Tomahawks average 8.5 runs per game, led by five hitters batting .375 or better. Marysville Pilchuck is seeking its first state semifinal berth since 1983.

Did you know? Bonney Lake senior Matthew Gretler, an Oregon State University signee, is batting .466 with 11 home runs. He hit three homers in a game earlier this season and has 22 extra-base hits in 73 at-bats.

Foss H.S. (Tacoma)

Game 1: Edmonds-Woodway (14-9) vs. Mercer Island (21-1), 10 a.m.

Game 2: Capital (16-7) vs. Lakeside (18-4), 1 p.m.

Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 45 minutes after conclusion of Game 2

Edmonds-Woodway: After reaching the state semifinals last year for the first time in program history, the Warriors overcame a slow start this season to earn their second consecutive trip to state. Edmonds-Woodway has won eight of its past 10 games, including a district semifinal victory over Arlington that secured a state berth and snapped the Eagles’ 19-game win streak. The Warriors are led by Julian Kodama, who is batting .373 with three homers and is one of the Warriors’ top pitchers.

Did you know? Led by a trio of NCAA Division-I bound players, Mercer Island averages 9.4 runs per game and has slugged 17 home runs. Oregon State University signee Greg Fuchs is batting .486 with three homers for the Islanders, who placed third in state last year.

CLASS 2A

Joe Martin Field (Bellingham)

Game 1: Mountlake Terrace (17-8) vs. Port Angeles (18-4), 10 a.m.

Game 2: Burlington-Edison (19-4) vs. Highline (16-6), 1 p.m.

Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 45 minutes after conclusion of Game 2

Mountlake Terrace: The Hawks punched their ticket to state with back-to-back one-run wins in district elimination games, including a 4-3 victory over Northwest Conference champion Anacortes. Matthew Johnson and Jonathan Kumai have team-high .333 batting averages, and reliever Dillon Gordon has pitched 23 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Mountlake Terrace is seeking its second trip to the state quarterfinals in program history and its first-ever state semifinal berth.

Did you know? Burlington-Edison is 8-1 in one-run games this season. The Tigers earned back-to-back one-run wins to claim the 2A Northwest District tournament title.
