Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for January

Below are the candidates for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Month for January. They were the winners of the four athlete-of-the-week polls during the month. The balloting for the athlete of the month closes on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at midnight. The winner will be featured in a future edition of The Herald.

Devin Gilbert | Cascade | Boys Basketball

Gilbert, a junior, scored 27 points and added 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks as Cascade beat Lynnwood 75-70 on Jan. 7 for its first win of the season. Gilbert won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Jan. 3-9 by claiming 1,196 (32.8%) of 3,648 votes.

Jaytin Hara | Kamiak | Boys Basketball

Hara, a junior, went 13 of 14 from the free-throw line on his way to scoring a game-high 26 points as the Knights knocked off Arlington 74-60 on Jan. 15. He scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter, connecting on a 3-pointer and 11 of 12 free throws, to help Kamiak pull away in the final period. Hara won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week poll for Jan. 10-16 by claiming 689 (42.5%) of 1,621 votes.

Bubba Palacol | Marysville Getchell | Boys Basketball

Palacol, a freshman, converted a three-point play with six seconds remaining to give Marysville Getchell a 56-55 win over Monroe in a Wesco 3A/2A matchup on Jan. 20. Palacol finished with 12 points. He won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Jan. 17-23 by claiming 795 (40.6%) of 1,957 votes.

Ella Sylvester | Everett | Girls Basketball

Sylvester, a senior, averaged 21 points over two contests to help the Seagulls extend their winning streak to six games. Sylvester netted game highs with 18 points in a 54-41 win over Archbishop Murphy on Jan. 25 and 24 points in a 59-31 victory over Shorewood on Jan. 28. Sylvester won the Athlete of the Week voting for Jan. 24-30 by claiming 1,100 (40%) of 2,752 votes.
