In the race for Lynnwood Council position 2, newcomer Mark Smith jumped ahead with about 48 percent while incumbent Martin “Marty” Nelson gained a respectable 30 percent, despite recovering from gallbladder surgery in recent weeks, according to early returns posted Tuesday night.
Challenger Craig Spicer trailed behind with about 21 percent.
County officials will finish counting ballots and certify the Primary by Sept. 30. The two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election on Nov. 8.
Smith, a former teacher and adventure travel business owner, said he is humbled by the outcome.
“I talked to hundreds and hundreds of voters one-on-one,” Smith said. “To have them support my positive vision for the city of Lynnwood is a humble and gratifying experience.”
Nelson said he will return to the campaign trail soon.
“Being unable to do much campaigning, I was lucky I guess,” Nelson said. “I guess I will have to get well a little faster and start campaigning.”
