Edmonds City Councilman Ron Wambolt got two familiar opponents as candidate filing opened Monday. Both Adrienne Fraley-Monillas and Lora Petso filed against Wambolt for Position 3 on the Council.

Fraley-Monillas lost two years ago to Councilman DJ Wilson. Petso a former councilwoman, lost to Councilwoman Peggy Pritchard Olson in 2003 and to Councilman Michael Plunkett in 2005.

Fraley-Monillas applied in January for the vacant Council position that went to Strom Peterson.

Wambolt said Tuesday that being in a primary will mean he’ll need to start campaigning earlier.

He said he didn’t know why the two challengers had filed against him.

“With Adrienne I suspect that she doesn’t like my support for higher building heights in some areas of the City,” he said. “With Lora I believe it’s because I opposed spending City money to buy 11 acres for a park where she lives. We purchased 5 1/2 acres of the Old Woodway Elementary school site.”

Fraley-Monillas, however, said that Wambolt needs a challenge because he has “watched us go deeper into a hole without stopping it.”

Petso was not available for comment Tuesday morning.
