    Weiner gave up three sacks in the opener and three more last week, a pattern that can’t continue this week against the NFL’s all-time sack leader – especially because he is protecting quarterback Brock Huard’s back side.

    Weiner is hardly the only one to blame, as Seattle has given up a league-high 22 sacks. If Huard is going to have any success, he’ll need time to throw the ball.

  • When the Panthers have the ball: Seattle CB Shawn Springs vs. WR Muhsin Muhammad.

    Springs still looks like he’s not quite 100 percent after missing all of training camp with a sore hamstring – no matter what coach Mike Holmgren says. Springs was victimized on a touchdown and another long pass in Monday night’s loss, although he had pretty good position on both plays.

    Not many teams tested Springs last season, but his performance in the national spotlight Monday means he’ll probably see more passes thrown in his direction. Muhammad is tied for seventh in the NFC with 24 receptions, and quarterback Steve Beuerlein will be looking for him again today.

  • Seahawks: Probable: DT Cortez Kennedy (back).

  • Panthers: Out: DT Alvin McKinley (knee) and DE Chuck Smith (knee). Questionable: T James Dexter (triceps). Probable: CB Eric Davis (hand).

  • Jan. 11, 1998. Mike Holmgren’s Green Bay Packers earn their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance following a 23-10 win over George Seifert’s San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship. It was the last time these two coaches faced off, resulting in victories for Holmgren in all four meetings.

  • : This is the first-ever meeting between the Seahawks and Panthers.

  • The Panthers have underachieved this season, and are in desperate need of a win. Despite big names on defense like Eugene Robinson, Reggie White and Sean Gilbert, the Panthers have really struggled out of the gates.

    Enter the Seahawks, who have hit some bumps in the road as well. With quarterback Brock Huard getting his first NFL start, Seattle’s offensive success could go either way.

    Both teams will have to rely on defense, and Carolina is probably better off with 14-year NFL veteran Steve Beuerlein at quarterback in a close game.
