SEATTLE — The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild will strike the Seattle Times and Post-Intelligencer at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday unless the union and newspapers agree on a new a contract before then, guild representatives said Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the two sides agreed to non-binding federal mediation. The mediator, Jeff Clark, was briefed Wednesday and bargaining was set to resume this morning.
"This is a troubling turn of events because, ultimately, a strike benefits no one," Seattle Times President Mason Sizemore said in a statement.
Both the Times and P-I will continue publishing in case of a strike, using managers and replacement workers, the statement said.
Guild employees also plan to publish an online newspaper if there is a walkout.
