MILL CREEK – The Meadowdale girls basketball team kept a firm hold on first place in the Wesco South standings with a convincing 81-36 victory at Jackson on Friday night.
The Mavericks remained undefeated in the conference at 7-0 (7-2 overall), while Jackson dropped to 3-2 (5-2).
Meadowdale coach Karen Blair credited her team’s first-quarter effort with setting the tone for the rest of the game.
“We wanted to come out with some good intensity,” she said, “and I thought we did. Our defense was solid, and we held them to just one field goal in the first quarter, so that got us off to a great start.”
While holding the host Timberwolves to just six first-quarter points, the Mavericks got scoring from six different players to take an 18-6 lead.
The third quarter was nearly identical to the first, as Meadowdale held Jackson to five points while posting 19 itself to put the game out of reach.
“I thought our offense was smooth throughout the game,” said Blair, “but especially in the second half, when we were patient moving the ball and worked it inside.”
Working the ball inside led to 14 second-half points for Meadowdale post player Jennie Swerk, who finished with a game-high 20.
