Jordan leads M-P past Everett

MARYSVILLE – Still recovering from a nasty flu bug, Nikki Jordan turned out to be the cure.
After sitting out the first quarter while watching her teammates fall behind by double digits, Jordan scored 26 points and made a game-saving steal in the final seconds to boost Marysville-Pilchuck to a 51-49 season-opening, non-conference girls basketball triumph over Everett on Wednesday night.
M-P’s Morgan Zamora’s biggest points of the night came on a game-winning 5-foot baseline jump shot, with seven seconds remaining. Jordan then stole the Seagulls’ last-chance full-court lob pass to secure the Tomahawks’ comeback victory.
Tomahawks coach Julie Martin figured Jordan would emerge from illness. “Before the game (Jordan) said, ‘I’m so excited.’ I could tell she was ready to go,” Martin said.
Everett surged to a 13-3 lead after eight minutes, but M-P applied a stifling press to bounce back. “They (the Tomahawks) had a little fire under them or something,” Martin said.
Zamora finished with 10 points. Serresa Stovall added eight points and plenty of energy.
“She (Stovall) was amazing,” Martin said. “She was on the floor, going after balls.”
According to Martin, Stovall also contributed several key steals and aggressive scoring drives.
Rachel Crossen’s 18 points paced Everett.
Marysville-Pilchuck recovered with defense and Jordan’s offensive eruption that included three 3-point baskets, but Martin wants more scoring balance.
“She (Jordan) is our go-to player right now. We need to have more go-to players.”

Mount Vernon 50, Burlington-Edison 46: Mount Vernon was behind by nine points with under four minutes remaining in the non-conference game, but the Bulldogs rallied to win their season opener. Junior Stephanie Pratt scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, including 5-for-7 from the free throw line. Jackie Castillo and Keisha Brown both hit key 3-pointers in the Bulldogs’ late run. Pratt also had 12 rebounds and six steals in the game.

Lake Stevens 76, Sedro Woolley 40: Katie Holloway supplied 19 points and 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, and Shawnta West had 21 points and six rebounds in Lake Stevens’ non-conference season opener.

Snohomish 60, Ferndale 36: Snohomish overcame a slow start to outscore Ferndale 35-14 in the second and third quarters combined and the Panthers rolled to the season-opening, non-conference victory. Emily Cassidy (14 points), Amanda Best (13) and Sydney Benson (10) paced the balanced Panthers, who held Ferndale star Liz McCarrell to just eight points through three quarters.
