Foster earns gold in Paris

Kelly Foster of Lake Stevens was one of nine members of the U.S. Indoor Rowing Team who won gold medals at the European Championships, held Dec. 14 in Paris.

The event drew 1,700 competitors from 19 nations. The rowers competed on ergometer machines.

Foster, 18, covered 2,000 meters in 6 minutes, 53.7 seconds to win the junior women’s division. Her nearest competitor finished in 7:02.9.

Foster, a member of the Everett Rowing Association, is the American record-holder for 2,000 meters on the ergometer in the women’s 14-18 age division (6:48.3).

Bowling

Lake Stevens pulls into lead: The Lake Stevens Vikings took over first place last week in the Everett Parks and Recreation High School Bowling League.

The Vikings finished the week six points in front of runner-up Mariner.

For the boys, Shawn Minning of Marysville-Pilchuck had the high series of the week (689) and Shaun Macy of Everett rolled the high game (256).

For the girls, Meredith Collins of Kamiak rolled the high game (182), edging out Candice Airport of Mariner (178 and 174).

Twelve matches into the season, Jordan Plunkett of Cascade leads the league with an average of 201.97. He is followed by Les Moore of Jackson (196.41) and Joshua Jackson of Mariner (193.38).

Football

Arlington grad honored: Greg Garka of Arlington has been named a second-team all-league tight end by the 2003 All-Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Garka, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound senior who played this fall for Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., had 26 catches for 349 yards and a touchdown

Soccer

Silver Lake earns tie: The Silver Lake Spirit U-12 girls soccer team tied Emerald City 1-1 on Dec. 13. Brianna Ellis scored for Silver Lake.
