M’S SPRING TRAINING

Published 9:00 pm Thursday, March 18, 2004

A daily look at the Mariners in spring training:

  • Mariners vs. San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale, 11:05 a.m. (PST)

  • Radio: KOMO (1000 AM)

  • TV: ESPN2

  • Pitchers: Right-hander Ryan Franklin will pitch the first four innings for the Mariners, followed by right-hander Shigetoshi Hasegawa, left-hander Terry Mulholland and right-hander J.J. Putz.

  • If Rafael Soriano keeps throwing in the bullpen like he did Thursday, he’ll see his first game action of spring training next week.

Soriano, the right-handed relief pitcher who injured a muscle in his left side early in spring training, threw without pain in his second bullpen session since being hurt.

Pitching coach Bryan Price said Soriano is scheduled for two more bullpen sessions and, barring setback, pitch in next Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

“His arm looks like magic,” Price said. “The ball was coming out of his hand beautifully. It’s that easy effort that we know. It looks like he’s playing an easy game of catch and it explodes into the glove.”

Soriano strained the internal oblique muscle in his left side while pitching in the bullpen on the first week of spring training.

  • Shortstop Rich Aurilia didn’t play Thursday and won’t today because of a strained right calf muscle that has sidelined him since Sunday.

  • Utility player Dave Hansen, out four of the last five games because of a sore left quad muscle, may miss two more days.

  • “You play a game down here in two hours, 21 minutes and you’re doing something right.”

Mariners pitching coach Bryan Price on Thursday’s victory, when five pitchers held the Brewers to one run and six hits.

  • Chris Snelling has traded the cast on his right hand for a bandage on his left knee. The hard-luck outfielder had a minor procedure on his knee this week to remove a screw from a previous surgery that had worked itself loose.

Snelling had surgery on his right hand Feb. 27 to repair a broken hamate bone, and the cast he had worn since then came off this week.

The hamate injury will take longer to heal than the latest adjustment to Snelling’s knee, and he isn’t expected to be ready for games until after spring training ends.
