EVERETT – Don’t let the 3-2 record fool you, the Everett Seagulls are serious contenders in the Wesco South.
The Seagulls celebrated on Homecoming Night, playing superbly on both sides of the ball pounding the football for 316 rushing yards and defensively shutting out the Shorewood Thunderbirds 42-0 Friday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The victory, coupled with losses by Mariner and Jackson, put Everett into a three-way tie for third in the division.
The top three 4A teams in the division make the playoffs. Second-place Shorecrest is a 3A team.
Justin Boyce and Andrew Skorney rushed for two touchdowns each and junior Andrew Stiger broke off a 50-yard TD run to lead the Seagulls.
Skorney rushed for 124 yards on 10 carries and Boyce added 83 yards on 16 carries.
Sophomore kicker Alex Schaller converted all six extra-point attempts and quarterback Bryce Levin connected with tight end Alex Wertheimer for three catches for 69 yards.
As the stats tell, the Seagulls played nearly flawless football offensively.
Defensively, they were perfect.
Arrow Mestas intercepted a Shorewood pass in the end zone and the Seagulls defense recovered two fumbles, one picked up by Kenny Hudson who rumbled in to the end zone for a 28-0 Everett lead.
A week after Shorewood’s Taylor Williams rushed for 332 yards and five touchdowns, the Thunderbirds struggled to establish a running game.
Williams was held to 68 yards on 23 carries and the Seagulls defense held Shorewood to 127 rushing yards and 214 total yards.
The Seagulls have outscored their opponents 125-14 in their three wins.
