The Snohomish County PUD has proposed lowering electricity rates by 4 percent in 2006. The PUD’s board of commissioners is holding a public hearing on the possible rate reduction at 1:30 p.m. today in the PUD’s commission meeting room, 2320 California St., Everett.

The commission will also hold a work session, open to the public, on the rates and the proposed 2006 budget at 9:30 a.m. today. The board is scheduled to adopt the new budget on Dec. 20. For more information, call 425-783-8411.

Sing carols tonight in Edmonds

A Christmas ship will visit Edmonds about 7 tonight at the fishing pier at the foot of Dayton Street.

Northwest Stream Center and the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation offers a program called Creatures of the Northwest Stream Center Black Lagoon at 11 a.m. Wednesday at 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Governor’s husband encourages reading

Mike Gregoire, husband of Gov. Christine Gregoire, visited View Ridge Elementary School in Everett last week to present 500 donated books and to talk to kids about the importance of learning to read.

The visit by Gregoire was part of “Read for 2006,” an event sponsored by 40 governors’ spouses through Scholastic Book Clubs. The project encourages kids around the world to read together for 2,006 seconds.

Mike Gregoire grew up in Everett, and his mother is a former Everett Public Schools teacher. He also attended a local Catholic elementary school and is an Everett High School graduate.
