SHORELINE – The Snohomish girls soccer team kept its state playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 4A District 1 playoff win over Shorewood Tuesday night at Shoreline Stadium.
Junior Lacee Ross scored the only goal the Panthers would need on an unassisted corner kick with 14 minutes, 11 seconds to play in the game.
“We talked about a right-foot sweep on the corner kick and it worked,” Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey said.
The Thunderbirds had a shot with a couple minutes remaining on a corner kick but they could not put it in the net.
Snohomish finished it off when Ashley Tombelaine kicked the ball downfield as time expired.
The game was evenly matched with defense being the key ingredient. Both goalkeepers made outstanding saves. Panthers keeper Madison Goverde saved a shot by Lily Albin early in the first half. Shorewood keeper Leah Butterfield made two saves in the second half.
“It was an even, hard-fought game,” Pingrey said.
Snohomish plays Lake Stevens at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Shoreline Stadium in a winner-to-state, loser-out third-place game.
