Everett capitalizes on Monroe errors

MONROE It was not exactly the way Steve Hannan wanted to see his Bearcats start their season.

A pair of Monroe punts led to two Everett touchdowns, the only ones in a defensive showcase, as the Seagulls beat the Bearcats, 14-3, at Monroe High School Friday night.

“We killed ourselves,” said Hannan, Monroe’s head coach. “Execution is what it’s all about and we didn’t execute.”

A mishandled punt snap in the first quarter gave Everett the ball on the Bearcat 6 yard line, which quickly enabled the Seagulls to jump out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to a 12-yard pass from Brice Herrick to Brent Swezey.

The only points Monroe put on the board came in the second quarter when a drive stalled deep in Everett territory and the ‘Cats had to settle for a 22-yard Danny Barajas field goal.

The third quarter handed the Seagulls another gift in the form of a fumbled punt on the Monroe 1. Two plays later, Alex Schaller ran the ball in to give the ‘Gulls a 14-3 lead.

All-in-all however, Hannan saw the two miscues as the main difference in the final score. “Everett was well-prepared,” said Hannan. “They were physical and without a doubt we were impressed.”
