EVERETT — The Mariner Marauders scored early and they scored often Friday night.
Mariner used 21 first-quarter points in defeating the Meadowdale Mavericks 49-17 in a Wesco South game played at Goddard Stadium.
Running back Shaundell Burns ran for 188 yards on nine carries and fullback Chhaylee Khat had 89 yards on 15 carries for the Marauders (3-1 in league, 3-1 overall).
Both Khat, who filled in for the injured Matt Jones, and Burns ran for two touchdowns.
The speedy Burns added a 24-yard touchdown reception for Mariner.
“Khat filled in great. He got some good, hard yards and Burns had an exceptional game,” Mariner head coach John Ondriezek said.
Quarterback Tyler Tuiasosopo was 5-for-8 for 98 yards and three touchdowns.
The senior connected with his sophomore brother, Mychael Tuiasosopo, for Mychael’s first touchdown reception of his high school career.
“It’s one of those things you have to experience. A lot of brothers want to play with each other, and just to be able to throw it to my brother was awesome,” Tyler said.
“It was pretty crazy,” the younger Tuiasosopo added.
Mariner’s defense came up big through the first three quarters holding the Mavericks to a first-quarter field goal.
Mariner defenders Stefan Doerscher and Tevin Dillon both intercepted Meadowdale passes and both turnovers led to Marauder touchdowns.
“The defense came through for us in the first half. They were reading their keys,” Ondriezek said.
Mariner’s defense held the Mavericks to four first downs in the first half and stopped Meadowdale on a critical fourth-and-4 on the Marauders 5-yard line.
The Mavericks were just 2-for-10 on third downs.
Meadowdale’s do-it-all back, Sam Werner, scored all 17 points for the Mavericks. The sophomore finished with three carries for 79 yards, which included a 58-yard touchdown run. Werner added a 15-yard touchdown reception and a 32-yard field goal. He also connected on all three point-after-attempts.
Meadowdale (1-2, 1-3) was playing without its top two backs. Tonna Njoku, who entered the game with 225 yards, did not play due to injury. The Mavericks leading rusher, Nick Montanari (393 total yards rushing), left hobbling after the first play from scrimmage.
