Talking points
Well, it was a pretty ugly first weekend for the Silvertips. More defensive breakdowns and inopportune penalties tonight. But this time the Tips let their frustrations get out of control as they resorted to brawling in the game’s final minute. Not what we’re used to seeing from Everett teams. In fact, in just about every facet it hasn’t looked much like Silvertip teams of the past. The Tips have things to fix before returning to the ice next weekend.
Turning point
With three minutes remaining in the second period and the score tied 2-2, Everett’s Zack Dailey rang the inside of the post on a three-on-two. If that goal goes in and Everett takes a 3-2 lead into the intermission, it’s a different game.
Hit of the day
Two stand out as Vancouver’s Craig Cunningham caught Lukas Vartovnik looking the other way and leveled him with an open-ice hit, then Everett’s Graham Potuer caught Evander Kane square and dumped him on his rear, both hits coming in the first period.
Three stars
First star: Dan Gendur, Everett. Curious choice for first star. Had a nice assist but wasn’t as effective as in Friday’s game.
Second star: Jonathan Blum, Vancouver. Really does it all on defense, also chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Third star: Michal Repik, Vancouver. Was the game’s main orchestrator and finished with a pair of assists.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Lance Bouma, Vancouver. Nice young player. Has good size and speed and gets into good positions. If he ever finds the finish to his game he’s going to be a handful.
Scratches
For Everett, goaltender David Reekie is sick. Center Peter Mueller, left wing Ondrej Fiala and defenseman Dane Crowley are at NHL camps. Forwards Shane Harper, Tyler Skauge, Tyler Eskesen, Carter Smith and Eric English and defensemen Eddie Friesen and Chris de la Lande were healthy scratches.
For Vancouver, left wing Milan Lucic is at his NHL camp. Forward James Henry and defensemen Stefan Schneider and Linden Saip were healthy scratches.
