Everett: Expediting downtown growth

The Everett City Council is scheduled on Wednesday to take a step that could speed up environmental reviews for future downtown projects.

Currently, individual downtown developments must go through independent review.

The 2006 Everett Downtown Plan calls for analyzing environmental impacts and identifying ways to accommodate future developments, without reviewing every project separately.

Perteet Engineering of Everett was tapped by city planners to prepare an environmental study for the downtown area. The council is set to vote on a contract with the company worth up to $219,000.

The council meets Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Everett City Council Chambers, 2930 Wetmore Avenue.

Chance to comment on major rezones

The Everett Planning Commission is scheduled tonight to take public comments on 10 proposed rezones and amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan.

Comments are to be used to help shape an environmental impact statement. Comments must be given to the planning department by Dec. 21 to be considered.

Proposed changes include rezoning a 100-acre quarry to allow the development of up to 2,150 apartment units, thousands of parking spaces and up to 400,000 square feet of commercial developments.

The industrial site is at 6300 Glenwood Avenue, north of the Boeing Freeway, and is owned by Rinker Materials.

Proposed land use changes won’t be voted on until mid-2008 at the earliest.

The commission meets at 6:30 p.m. at Everett Station’s fourth floor Weyerhaeuser Room, 3201 Smith Avenue.
