Arlington tops rival Stanwood

STANWOOD — The Arlington wrestling team’s opening statement pre-empted any Stanwood Spartans’ rebuttal Tuesday night.

The Eagles racked up a 21-0 lead after four matches en route to their second consective Battle of the Bull title and 44-14 Wesco North victory.

The Eagles also captured the Stilly Cup with a 34-14 football victory.

Stanwood had captured six straight Battle of the Bull titles before the past two seasons.

Arlington’s Jordan Anderson opened the meet with a 7-4 decision at 189 pounds before three staight Eagles pins put the meet out of reach. Richard Perkins (215) and Mark Davis (285) had first-round pins and Jason Johnson (103) had a third-round pin for Arlington.

Stanwood countered with three straight victories but only closed to within 10 points of Arlington’s lead.

Joey Duran restored Arlington’s momentum, capturing five points with a 26-11 technical fall at 112. Richard Bascom (119) then wrestled a to a 6-1 decision for the Spartans.

Stanwood captured just two more victories by decision.

Arlington finished the meet the way it started with four straight victories.
