Councilman Olson earns leadership certificate

Everett City Councilman Mark Olson recently received a Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

Olson, who has served on the council since 2002, completed more than 30 hours of training on various topics including budgeting, land use planning, personnel and leadership.

He sits on several council subcommittees dealing with higher education, the riverfront and contract negotiations.

Mill Creek

Bring electronics to City Hall for recycling

Computers, DVD players, monitors and other electronics can be recycled at an event planned by Mill Creek City Councilwoman Donna Michelson.

The recycling event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17 at Mill Creek City Hall, 15728 Main St. People do not need to live in Mill Creek to participate in the event.

People must pay to have their old electronics recycled. Some costs include $20 for televisions, $10 for monitors, $10 for laptop computers, $5 for VCRs, and $5 for printers and scanners. Refrigerators can be recycled for $25. Cell phones, keyboards, computer mice and telephones can be recycled free.

City plans sale of surplus items March 11

The city is set to have a surplus sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 11 at City Hall, 806 W. Main St. Items include computer systems and phones. Minimum prices will be indicated on all items.

Island County

Hero Award nominations

The Island County Community Health Advisory Board is accepting nominations from anyone living on Camano or Whidbey islands for an award to honor people who go the extra mile to help others in need. The Linda Lee Martens Health Hero Award of Island County is named for the late executive secretary of the county’s health department.

Past winners have been selected for their work in child abuse prevention, fostering children, working to reduce substance abuse, addressing environmental issues and assisting the elderly in finding health care. The deadline for nominations is March 1.
