50 years ago (1958)
Paul Peterson, president of the YMCA board, announced that seven new members had been elected to the board of directors: Dick Brannon, Loren Forman, Margaret LeRoux, Bob Nord, Art Soli, Harry Stuchell and Dr. Harold Watlz. Re-elected to the board were Walter Precht and James Simonton. Lloyd Walgren was elected to fill a vacancy.
Coach Pete Lee’s Everett High Seagulls brought the state high school swimming trophy back to Everett for the first time since 1944. The Gulls were victorious at the Washington State Swimming and Diving championships held at the University of Washington pool. Everett compiled 83, believed to be the largest ever amassed at the event.
Swimmers included Ed La Mar, Merman La Mar, Russ Curran, Phil Bird, Ed Kasey, Mickey Enberg, Bill Gunderson, Jerry Holland, Don Knobbs, Neil Westover, Irvan Seymour, Steve Quinn, Larry Bowen, Ron Woolcock, Carl Hageman and Gordon Reykdal.
25 years ago (1983)
Marjorie Engelstad was the 1982 Volunteer of the Year for the Snohomish County chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
Area students attending Seattle Pacific University, who were included in the 1983 edition of “Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges,” included Wendy Worrall of Everett, Kevin Leach of Arlington and Cheryl Leoff of Oak Harbor.
