Saving the best for last is a familiar expression, and it also turned out to be a pretty good motto for softball pitcher Tracie Adix in the 2007 season.

Adix, a 2003 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School who went on to play four seasons at Chicago’s DePaul University, was outstanding as a senior for the Blue Demons. A hard-throwing right-hander, she was named the team’s Most Outstanding Player after finishing her 2007 campaign with a 22-4 record and a 0.89 earned-run average.

That ERA ranked No. 5 in the nation in NCAA Division I.

The other season statistics were equally impressive for Adix, who is one of four finalists for The Herald’s Woman of the Year in Sports award. She appeared in 38 games, making 27 starts, and tossed 20 complete games with 10 shutouts. In 195 2/3 innings, she gave up 112 hits and 25 earned runs with 168 strikeouts and just 28 walks.

Opposing batters hit just .160 against her in 2007.

With Adix leading the way, DePaul finished with a 47-13 record _ 20-0 in the Big East Conference _ and reached the College World Series, where the Blue Demons’ season finally ended with two losses in three games.

DePaul finished the season ranked sixth nationally on both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.

After such a stellar season, the awards came quickly for Adix. She was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association/Louisville Slugger second team All-American. And she was also named the Big East Pitcher of the Year after recording a perfect 10-0 record in league play.
