Monroe gets grant to fight teen tobacco use

The Monroe School District recently received a grant from the Washington Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.

It will be used to curb tobacco use among high school students by increasing awareness and enforcement of tobacco-free school policies.

Overall, about 15 percent of high school students smoke in Washington.

Monroe plans to use the $21,000 grant to get word out to students and improve the delivery of that message to adults that visit the schools.

Monroe has a long history of prevention measures and its new effort will have greater emphasis on partnerships with families.

Trinity students to pay a visit to future home

Trinity Lutheran College plans to take an “urban plunge” in Everett involving a busload of 40 students from the College’s Issaquah campus on Friday and Saturday.

Several human services, church and community organizations are playing host to groups of students. Activities include service learning projects, meeting community organizers and leaders, and learning about future volunteer opportunities in the city.

Dave Ellingson, a college faculty member, describes the weekend as a chance for the college “to listen deeply to the community” about its assets and needs and how it can help.

Participating organizations include Interfaith Family Shelter, Food Bank, Salvation Army, ACORN Snohomish County, Kiwanis House, Lutheran Community Services Familias Unidas and First Presbyterian Pre-School, as well as a panel of community organizers and volunteers. The student group will stay overnight at Central Lutheran on Friday and on Saturday participate in the Festival Cinco de Mayo at Everett Community College before returning to Issaquah.

Trinity is a private and independent Lutheran college that is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

The college is moving to Everett and plans on opening its doors to students and the public by the fall quarter.
