Shorewood leads race for South’s last two district berths

MUKILTEO — Go-ahead runs can happen in many ways.

For Shorewood, it happened when Chloe Pope-Levison got caught in a run-down in the top of the sixth inning and teammate Kayla McCarthy crossed home plate.

The Thunderbirds posted a 4-3 win on Tuesday night at Kamiak High School and took a 11/2 game lead on Kamiak in the race for the Wesco South third playoff seed. Kamiak still leads Edmonds-Woodway by half a game for the final seed.

The Knights had a chance to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded but weren’t able to get a hit.

“Shorecrest did a good job of playing solid defense and their pitcher did a good job of keeping us a little off balance,” said Kamiak coach Bill Bowker.

Shorewood scored the first two runs in the top of the second on a base hit by Caitlin Forinash. Adrianna Droz responded in the third with a double that scored Teddi McFall.

Kamiak then took the lead in the fifth when base hits by Droz and Meagan Mullanix each scored a run.

“It was a close game,” said Bowker. “It was a good game.”
