Roundtable focuses on district budget

The superintendent’s monthly roundtable in the Edmonds School District is set for noon Wednesday and will focus on the proposed budget for next fall.

Assistant Superintendent Marla Miller will lead the discussion at the Educational Service Center, 20420 68th Ave. W., in Lynnwood. Anyone is welcome to attend and encouraged to bring a lunch.

Water, coffee and cookies will be provided.

Marysville gets help with energy savings

Puget Sound Energy is donating $159,214 to the Marysville School District to help fund an energy conservation project at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The project costs around $463,248 and is expected to save the district $50,000 annually in gas costs, said Keith Stefanson, the district’s maintenance manager. New technology is helping the district cut back on energy costs, he said.

The energy conservation project is part of a 2004 bond measure that included health and safety and efficiency improvements.

Stanwood families can learn about Saratoga

The Saratoga School Family Learning Center in the Stanwood-Camano School District will host an open house at 7 p.m. June 17 for families interested in the program.

The meeting will explain the home school support program, answer questions about the program, and discuss types of services and support families would like to receive.

Saratoga School is at 9307 271st Street NW in Stanwood. The school is just west of the Stanwood Post Office in the former Stanwood-Camano School District office building.

Harbour Pointe to hold science fair Thursday

Harbour Pointe Middle School will showcase seventh-grade students’ Science Fair Inquiry Projects from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the school, 5000 Harbour Pointe Blvd., Mukilteo.

The event is open to the public.

The fair is part of the school’s effort to help students meet state science standards of being able to understand the natural world through science ideas and methods. It encourages them to answer their own questions and design solutions to their problems.

Those who attend will be given “Einstein Tickets” to award to students for thoroughly answering questions or explaining different aspects of their experiment.

Lakewood hires human resources director

Michael Mack was recently selected as the new executive director of human resources and administrative services.

Mack, who earned superintendent credentials in 2004, served as the superintendent at the International School of Latvia. Before that, he was principal of Stanwood Middle School from 1999 to 2004 and assistant principal at Kamiakin Junior High in the Lake Washington School District from 1993 to 1999.

Mack lives in the Lakewood area with three children attending Lakewood schools. His wife, Jeanne, is also a kindergarten teacher at Lakewood Elementary School. He will begin July 1.

Ceremony planned for Jones Creek center

An opening ceremony for the Jones Creek Outdoor Learning Center is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The center is expected to provide Marysville students with science and environmental learning opportunities, while also helping to restore wetland and salmon stream habitat.

The Marysville School District owns the 11-acre parcel of land. The district partnered with the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force, the City of Marysville, the Tulalip Tribes and Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 81 on the project.

The ceremony is free and open to everyone. Tours of the site and light refreshments will be available.

Club 3 tutoring program continues at school

A grant from the McNaughton Foundation will enable the Club 3 tutoring program to continue for another year.

The foundation, which was founded by Marna and Mark McNaughton of Edmonds, is donating around $60,000 to keep the program running next school year.

Club 3 is a free, after-school program for students at College Place Elementary in Lynnwood.

The program is close to wrapping up its first full year and has served 60 students.
