Fire departments help volunteer and family
Arlington Fire Department members and The North County Fire and EMS crews plan to host fundraising events to help the family of former fire department volunteer Greg Garka.
The Arlington fundraiser is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Arlington Haggen food store, 20115 74th Ave. NE. Firefighters plan to grill hot dogs, sell soda pop and offer a car wash to raise money for the Garka Fund at Washington Mutual bank.
The North County Fire and EMS fundraiser is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Stanwood Haggen store, 26603 72nd Ave. NW.
Greg and Kelsey Garka’s son Mason was born June 20 with a heart defect. Firefighters hope to raise money to support the family with their expenses and Mason’s care at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
Both Arlington High School graduates, the Garkas are now Stanwood are residents.
YMCA needs supplies for youth conference
The YMCA of Snohomish County seeks donations to help kids who plan to travel to Europe to participate in the International Youth Conference in August. YMCA branches are collecting small school supplies until July 25.
One team from Snohomish County plans to join the more than 10,000 kids from 40 different countries participating in the program Aug. 3-9 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Shelters hold Mukilteo event for cat adoptions
Mukilteo Pawsitive Alliance holds its second annual MEOW event in Mukilteo from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mukilteo YMCA, 10601 47th Place W., Mukilteo.
More than 50 cats and kittens from six rescue organizations will be available for adoption. Each cat has been altered and is up-to-date on shots. Adoption fees range from $75 to $100.

Hawaiian barbecue aids cancer research
The Fireplace in Everett will holds an aloha barbecue and silent auction to benefit the American Cancer Society from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at 2320 Everett Ave., Everett.

Everett class teaches foster parenting
Compass Health in Everett holds a free foster parent pre-service training from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 4526 Federal Ave., Building 1, Everett.
The class is the first in a series and is required to become a foster parent in Compass Health’s Therapeutic Foster Care program.

Entries due Monday for juried art show
Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission is seeking entries for its 30th annual juried art show. Entries are due Monday.
Artists are asked to submit entries as digital photos, saved to a CD with the entry fee of $10 per piece, to Friends of the Arts, 5303 228th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043. There is a limit of three entries per category.
The 30th annual Arts of the Terrace show is Sept. 27 at the Mountlake Terrace Library.
