Kylin Munoz was already known as one of the best prep volleyball players in the state. Now she’s officially considered among the best in the nation.

On Friday Munoz was listed No. 6 on PrepVolleyball.com’s Senior Aces countdown, which ranks the top Class of 2009 players in America. The rankings are based on feedback from college coaches, who scrutinize hundreds of top players during the recruiting process.

“It’s pretty exciting. It just shows that all the hard work, it’s paid off,” said April Munoz, Monroe High School’s first-year head volleyball coach and Kylin Munoz’s mom.

Kylin Munoz, The Herald’s 2007 All-Area Player of the Year, helped Monroe win the eighth-place trophy last year at the Class 4A state tournament. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter received all-state first team honors.

In April she verbally committed to play for Brigham Young University. Munoz plans to sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent with the Cougars in November.

Munoz, who also plays for the Washington Volleyball Academy, started attracting recruiters years ago. By age 15 she had already received offers from elite Division I programs, April Munoz said.

This past offseason Kylin Munoz, known as a fearsome hitter, worked to improve her defensive skills and back-row play. She had minor arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-August but was back on the court a week later, April Munoz said.

One of several key players back for Monroe, Kylin Munoz and the Bearcats begin the season ranked No. 3 in the Washington coaches’ 4A state poll.

Meadowdale RB serving suspension

Fresh off an intense 28-27 season-opening victory against Edmonds-Woodway, the Meadowdale football team will be without its 2007 leading rusher for two more weeks.

Naji Moore-Taylor, a junior running back/defensive back, didn’t play against E-W and will miss two more games as part of a three-game suspension he received for an athletic-code violation last fall, Meadowdale head coach Mark Stewart said.

Last season Moore-Taylor rushed for more than 900 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is allowed to practice with the team during his suspension.

Kamiak’s Jones picks WWU volleyball

Bailey Jones, a senior at Kamiak, verbally committed to play volleyball for Western Washington University. Jones, a 6-foot middle blocker, committed in mid-August. Last year she helped Kamiak place fourth at the Class 4A state tournament.

Western Washington has one of the top Division II volleyball programs in the nation. Last season the Vikings reached the national championship match. Jones said that she plans to sign with WWU in November.

“The coach (Diane Flick) is amazing and the girls seemed so excited and happy to be there,” said Jones, who toured Western when Kamiak attended a camp there this past summer.
